The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting colder but it’s this time of year the city really comes to life. With food festivals, plenty of drinks, music and art around every corner, it’s no wonder York has built a reputation as the ‘City of Festivals’.

Or get more hands on and learn how to make your own delicious bread, ice-cream and even cheese at the Food Factory.

York’s Big Weekend –  28th to 30th September

There’s probably no better time to visit York than during the Big Weekend. With 3 major festivals all taking place in this small city!

As well as the Food and Drink Festival, York will be home to York Mediale! A series of events including thought-provoking Exhibitions and Installations as well as Conferences on topics such as philosophy, society and the environment.

Also taking place will be York’s Baloon Fiesta! With more than 40 hot air balloons taking to the sky in what’s sure to be an amazing aerial display! At ground level, however, there is a wide variety of food stalls and family activities and is sure to be a magical experience.

With all these incredible events taking places at venues all over the city, your sure to find something to love.

The Yorkshire Whiskey Festival – 6th of October

For one day only York’s World Famous Racecourse becomes home to the Yorkshire Whiskey Festival.

The festival is celebrating its 10th anniversary and will host a wide variety of whiskey makers from across the globe! Whether you’re a seasoned whiskey drinker or not, you will be sure to find the perfect flavour for you with free samples at every stall, all you need to do is ask!

Oktoberfest – 26th of October

No need to go all the way to Germany as the famous Oktoberfest comes to Clifton Park, York for the first time ever! So grab yourself a Stien and bring on the beer, Bavarian style! Get your German on with Oompah bands from around the world and don’t forget the currywurst.

HallowScream at York Maze Oct 12th– Nov 3rd

Described as “a terrifyingly entertaining night of fear and fun” and including 5 separate live-action haunted houses and plenty of spooky characters! This is a must for all horror lovers!

These years Hallowscream is based on a farm where a terrible tragedy occurred back in 1873, and the restless souls who died on the night return each Halloween to torment those who dare to visit.

Think you’re brave enough?

All of these great events and much more are all happening just a stone’s throw away from our hostel in York!
