The great Benjamin Franklin once claimed that “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy”. In this case, York is a Haven for all beer drinkers and pub goers, as the stars have aligned and given this city over 365 pubs to choose from which is exactly one for every day of the week this including several of the greatest assets one pub may carry being a BEER GARDEN.

York has it all, from avant-garde cocktail bars where mixologists show off big time, to traditional pubs with stiff classic beverages, to the beer gardens celebrating the city’s newfound love of craft brewing.

Beer Gardens are a staple of the summertime in York, due to the nice warm weather and the cold beverages consumed by thirsty patrons, the beer garden is the adult version of Disneyland from many cold refreshments to choose from to a nice pub grub as well as an atmosphere that is one of a kind.

Here are our recommended Beer Gardens to check out while in York

BY THE WALLS

The Lamb & Lion is an old English Inn adjoining Bootham Bar, one of York’s four ancient Roman gateways. The beer garden boasts unrivaled views of the city walls & York Minster. You can have a meal here or just enjoy the scenery and a pint. Look & listen out for the Peregrine falcons circling the Minster.

ON THE RIVER

Dyl’s Cafe Bar at Skeldergate Bridge is well worth a visit, the Motor house is a quirky old tower with a great little terrace overlooking the River Ouse. This independent cafe and bar is the perfect place to buy grab a quick cuppa, enjoy lunch or have a pre-dinner cocktail.

SECRET GARDEN

The Phoenix is an unspoiled 18th century Inn, 75 George St, close to the Barbican Centre just inside the city walls. Cosy log fires in the winter and a beautiful secret sun trap out back for those summer days, the paved garden overlooks the ancient city walls, switch off your mobile phone & chill with a glass of wine & a good book.

GUILTY PLEASURE

YatesThe ultimate York experience, nothing speaks better volumes than £1 pints and 2 for £3 jagerbombs every Wednesday and even though it will come with the realisation of what am I doing here and why does everyone look 14, this place will give you one of your most unforgettable nights of all time from a steady range of tap beers to an interior that is comfortable enough to make any patron happy. Great place to meet new people. Get those dancing shoes on and prepare to lose your dignity and be ready for a wild night.

BEST FOR… TINDER DATES

The FoxThis pub boasts York’s largest beer garden and has an atmosphere like no other with is large open dog-friendly.

Space this place is home to many furry friends and also just as cute but the more annoying equivalent… children which you will find playing in the playground while mum and dad sink down a few cold ones, even though there is a huge family demographic you will also find workmates, solo drinkers and my personal favourite the tinder date, this beer garden lets everyone feel included and puts a smile on your face from dogs running round to the lovely staff putting on a display of fast-paced bartending with a high quality service that is unheard of these days. Bring your date here and you will be serenaded by the live music which is the ultimate cherry on top.
