Our staff recommends… Dark Sugars

With Astor Hostels situated in lovely peaceful west London, with its immense parks and picturesque terraces, we very much appreciate venturing out to the rustic and pleasantly gritty East End. The winding medieval streets and old industrial estates are packed with food stalls, vintage shops and outlets for upcoming and existing designers.

The heart of this bustling borough unofficially known as Hipsterville is no doubt the beautiful High Street of Brick Lane. Home to about a dozen different Bangladeshi and oriental restaurants and the famous Brick Lane Market, luckily the street also offers a place to buy dessert. Dark Sugars used to be a tiny little shop crammed with ornate wooden platters and tables filled with different kinds of chocolate! The owner himself would dance around the store to reggae beats offering free samples to everybody who entered the shop! The place has now moved a little farther down the street into a bigger venue, which made it lose some of the cosy atmosphere, but in turn made room for even more pralines and truffles!

The chocolate is reasonably priced and you can either pay per 100g or buy a gift box to fill up! They also sell hot beverages, my favourite being the chilli hot chocolate, which is crowned with a good measure of freshly chopped good quality, white, milk and dark chocolate! The incredibly rich and velvety liquid with heating notes of chilli is the salvation a sore throat the day after a night out needs.

The easiest way to get to Dark Sugars from Astor Kensington is to take the central line from nearby Queensway station and get off at Liverpool Street Station. From there you’re only a 5-10 minute walk from this palate-pleasing paradise. Another option is to get the overground to Shoreditch High St station.
