3 Best Day Trips from London

Posted August 16, 2015

It’s been famously said that when you’re tired of London you’re tired of life, and after a little over a year living in this wonderful city I’m inclined to agree. However, that doesn’t mean a little break isn’t called for now and again. For the frantic tourist trying to fit everything this city has to offer into three or four brief days this might not exactly be on the cards, but for those taking it a little slower a day trip out of town can be the perfect thing to break up the pace. With its central location and great transport connections London is brilliantly placed for a quick getaway. So without further ado here is a brief list of some of our favourite places to visit out of town.

Oxford

The world famous university town, Oxford offers visitors heritage, tradition, culture, architecture, and possibly even a sneaky pint or two (it is a college town after all). Quickly and easily accessible via the Oxford Tube coach service leaving regularly from Victoria Coach station or by train from Paddington Station you can be out of London in no time at all. Tours of the town and some of the historic colleges are available from the tourist information centre although it is advisable to book online beforehand, and make sure you check out the Ashmolean Museum (free entry).

Brighton

London’s favourite beachside getaway. Whilst the pebbly excuse for a beach might not be to everyone’s taste there is still much to see in Brighton. Only an hour by train from Victoria Station, once there jump on one of the amusement rides at the Palace Pier or do some shopping in The Lanes, and don’t forget the Royal Pavilion. Brighton is also the gay capital of Britain so if that’s your flavour make sure you check out the area around St James Street.

Two of the most iconic tourist attractions in England, Stonehenge and the Roman Baths, are easily visited together as a day trip. There are several tour companies running day trips leaving daily and often including Windsor Castle as a bonus stop. Beware though; these tours often leave early so keep the drinking to a minimum the night before. While in Bath make sure to stop for a coffee at Colonna & Small’s, run by three time UK barista champion Maxwell Colonna-Dashwood.
